I couldn't access my credit union account online, and the phone numbers they offered to send a new password to - well, I didn't recognize either of them.  This, of course, happened on a Friday night.  So a personal trip to the credit union on Monday morning was necessary.  We got it all unwound, not without a serious amount of time being spent, including multiple calls to their tech support.  Funny part of the trip - the person helping me said "yours is the lowest account number I've seen!" (Personal business)

From there, I went by my LBS, because Bleriot's Cane Creek SCR-5c brake levers are giving it up (they are 10 years old; maybe they've been bounced hard on the pavement a few years back).  Sadly, they didn't have them, and that was where I'd bought them originally.  The mechanic said maybe they were no longer made.  I didn't think so.  Went home and ordered them from Universal Cycles.  (Store)

Personal care, but not for me.  Close family member is going through a very stressful time; I figured she needed a walk to talk it though.  So we hiked to Michael's and the Mill End Store.  Things were purchased, but that wasn't the point.

We were babysitting grandson #1 for a couple of days, and brought his bike (Wishbone 3 in 1, great strider bike that grows with the kid, and yes, I did buy it for his first birthday present) along.  Day the second had non-rain, so he wanted to ride the bike to the park (.5 miles uphill, and he's not yet 4 years old).  On the way, he wanted to stop at Great Grandma and Great Grandpa's home. He convinced Great Grandma to come along.  My dad elected to stay home.  We went to the first park (elementary school playground), and, after awhile adjourned to the newly-remodeled park.  He and my husband played on the equipment.  I did, a bit, but hung out on the swings with my mom.

Someone got to ride a bike

Errandonnee 6 and 7

Not raining.  Stack of library books waiting for me.  Free birthday drink at Starbucks.  This was a plan.

First, to the library, where I commiserated with another patron about the hassle of locking up.

Picked up my 4(!) books (Interlibrary Loan, three from Tacoma, WA, one from Worthington, OH), and went back out to unlock.  Same patron, also planning to leave.  His personal music at the time was "Hey Joe" (baBAAAbabababaBAAA; been awhile since I heard that one.  Decades, maybe).

Thence to Starbucks, where I lived dangerously and just helmet-locked.  Ordered their newer Chai Tea Latte (lightly sweetened, more spicy than the original, or so the server claimed) in my personal commuter mug.

And home, via the Hall Creek Enhancement.  Saw one duck.

Learnings - Interlibrary Loan books can come from as far away as Scotland!

4.3 miles.

Errandonnee 4 and 5

Two errands today.

#4 Weaving class at Multnomah Arts Center.  I'll file this one under work/school commute :-). It wasn't going to rain until 4pm today, so I got to ride.  Yes, I could ride when it is raining, but I'd have to bring a change of clothes, as I truly hate hanging out in wet clothing.

So, today's plan was to wind the warp for my next project - Overshot Dish Towels.  Last week I took my 3.7 lb cone of 10/2 Georgia cotton in to use for the warp; today I wound a 530 end (thread) warp.

The warp is draped over the loom.  40" weaving width, 8 shaft loom.  Could be fun.

#5 Knitting Group, filed under, oh, I'll figure it out later.  Ate my sack lunch at the conclusion of Weaving Class, then proceeded over to Karen's house, where I knitted with a group of like-minded folk.  This group has been meeting for years.

And then home.  I could have gone by the library, as a book is waiting, but I didn't want to have to lock my bike up again, plus there was too much stuff on the bike to leave it unattended, even if it was locked up.

13.7 miles.

Errandonnee One, Two, and Three

And it was a good thing I had receipts, totally forgot about the picture thing until the last stop!

March 20, 2017

From home to the dentist - 7.3 miles.

I went the northern route, on the Hwy 26 bike path, then experimented with staying south of Hwy 26 at Camelot Ct (mi 2.4), rather then the usual path continuation to Skyline/Scholl's Ferry with the interesting left turn onto Humphrey/Hewett.  Learning there - more steeper climbing that way!

From there, I would have normally dropped down Dosch to Sunset (mi 5), but both Google Maps and RWGPS suggested I continue up to Fairmount Blvd, and then drop down through the neighborhood side streets.  Every road descending from Fairmount is steep.  Intellectually I knew that.  I did.  How bad could it be?  9-10% downgrades, narrow twisty roads, and generally more potholes and grit than pavement.  I was never so happy to make it down to Sunset Blvd in my life.  Once there, I only had to go another easy mile.

As for the dentist - I will say that N20 makes a dental visit much less stressful.  Plus, the dentist decided it was much less work than originally estimated, so it cost me much less as well!

See receipt #1 for documentation.

From the dentist to the library - 7.6 miles.

The plan from here was to cut between Wilson HS and Rieke Elementary down to SW Vermont, work my way to Multnomah Village (we'll be back here at least once this coming week), and then follow my known route back to Beaverton, except continuing on SW 5th to the library, rather than turning north just before Hwy 217.  Really, I only needed supplementary navigation assistance from Fairmount to the dentist, and then from there to Multnomah Village.

The only unknown was would the Fanno Creek Trail be open?  There had been some contentious trail closures (Portland Water Bureau has a sewage pump station on the trail OUTSIDE THEIR CITY LIMITS AND OUTSIDE THEIR COUNTY!) for pump station work, and the proposed detour put cyclists on SW Garden Home Rd.  Sounds bucolic and all, but that section is a highly traveled, very narrow 2 lane road with ditches right at the fog lines.  I myself pestered both our parks district (it is their trail) and the road department, and they did put up Bicycles on Roadway signs.  The few times I rode that way, though, I crossed Garden Home and paralleled it through the neighborhoods until SW Oleson Rd.

To make a short story long, I was pleasantly surprised to find the construction finished and the trail open.

Felt a few rain drops along here.

So, right, the library.   I was picking up a book which was an interlibrary loan, and, after fruitlessly searching the Hold books racks, I asked where it was - turns out ILL books must be picked up and checked out at the service desk.  The book came all the way from Nebraska.  Pretty cool.

See receipt #2 for documentation.

From the library to the fabric store - .8 miles.

Nothing to report here.  Got to the fabric store, bought my velcro for the Porteur Bag Sewing Project (for flaps to attach the removable lining), had a great conversation with the cashier about the project, as I was adding the velcro to my plastic bag (suboptimal and tacky).

From the fabric store to home - 1.3 miles.

Since I had gone to the fabric store, I continued directly east through the Hall Creek Enhancement to SW 114th.  While it is very short, I love riding through there.  The creek was very high, and I only saw a couple of Canada geese.  Usually there are ducks everywhere.

See receipt #3 for documentation, and I even took a couple of pictures.

I could have stopped for coffee, but I was getting tired of locking and unlocking my bike.  There is good coffee at home.

Beat the rain home.

The route.

Total distance - 17 miles.

Errandonnee 12, Fini!

Careful perusal of my categories revealed that I had one "you carried WHAT?" left.

#12: Carrying a spinning wheel, 2.74 mi, "You carried WHAT?"

Fellow Participant Tess and I had been running errands all around Beaverton, on the same days, and going to many of the same places, but not at the same time.  We hadn't met before, and decided to put an end to "ships passing in the night."  Tess also knits, so we decided to meet up at Jim and Patty's Coffee and knit.  And/or spin.

What?  I could have taken my drop spindle.  That was easy.  Small, lightweight.  Easy to carry.  No.  I brought a spinning wheel.

Hoped it would fit in my pannier, but it was a bit too big.  I have two wheels, one which LOOKS like a spinning wheel:

It Followed Me Home, Can I Keep It?

And a travel wheel, which is smaller and considerably more portable.  Still a bit bulky for a bike, but with enough bungees, it attached securely to the porteur rack on my Rivendell Bleriot:

#12: unloading the spinning wheel at Jim and Patty's Coffee

Arrived, ordered a mocha with orange syup ("oh, you want a Borgia!"  "Is that what it is called?"), and a Florida Orange Roll.  Reassembled the wheel.  (Learning: Borgia Mocha)

#12: Borgia mocha and Florida Orange roll. And the spinning wheel

Shortly thereafter, Tess rode up.  I have to say, this was the Best Errandonnee Ever.  She's a non-practicing engineer.  She knits.  She teaches knitting.  We know people in common in a couple of circles.  This was GREAT!

#12: And Tess, so we wouldn't be ships passing in the night

After a few hours of this, we both needed to move on to the balance of our day.  Packed it up again, and rode home.

#12: headed back home, crossing Hwy 217

Errandonnee 10 and 11

#10: Transporting a Pie, .62 mi, "You carried WHAT?"
After our St Pat's blowout, we found we had an excess of pies.  Also an excess of salad and cooking greens (another story) and Irish wholemeal bread.  The greens and half of the bread went into the pannier.  Easy.  The pie went on the porteur rack, and I rode over to my parents' home and delivered the goods.  "Home delivery!"

#10: Pie transport to the parents

Why, yes, it would have been faster to walk over.  But that wasn't the point :-)

A good store baked pie and relatively smooth roads make this easy.

#11: Multimoding to the Portland Timbers Game, 3.06mi, "Personal Business"
While it is possible to ride to the game and park there, I found out last time that secure bike parking is restricted to those who elected to have "bike parking" as part of their season ticket package.  We elected for transit tickets.  This time, I rode up to our transit station, and left the bike in the Bike Link secure lockup.  I also carried a pair of non-cycling shoes to change into, because one stands the entire game.  Locked the cycling sandals and helmet up with the bike.

#11: multimoding to the Portland Timbers game

Or, for a more complete overview:
Background, me in the stadium
Bike in the bike cage
Beverage up with an interesting Budweiser logo at the bottom, and
because I am a fidgeter, I poked at the bottom and
it detached!
It was a magnet!
Ack!
Still cider in the cup.
I quickly tipped it diagonal, so didn't lose much.
What were they thinking?

Errandonnee 2015, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9

March 10, 2015
Bicycle: Rivendell Bleriot
#4, Beaverton Library, Art & Entertainment
Ohh, email from the library!  Moar books for MEEEEEEE!  Zipped on over, WITH proper bike lock this time, and snagged my books.  Discovery on the way to my next stop - one of my favorite pieces of public art, a big upside down canoe with a saddle (yes.) is no longer there!  It was at the corner of SW Lombard and SW Broadway.  And now it isn't.

#4, Beaverton Library run

#5 Jim and Patty's Coffee, Personal Care
Stopped off on the way home to sit down, drink a Peppermint Patty Mocha, eat a Well of Nutella, and start reading one of the books (Rose on Fire) for awhile.  It was very de-stressing.

#5, Jim and Patty's Coffee

The strip mall has a terrible bike rack - one of those elementary school wheel-breakers.  I locked the bike to itself, and wedged it between a table and the store window.  Chatted with an employee on my way out - I am not the first one to complain about the rack.  Maybe a more suitable one will appear in my lifetime.

#5, Jim and Patty's Coffee

Total miles: 4.33

March 12, 2015
Bicycle: Rivendell Bleriot
#6 Coffee Pickup from co-op run by former co-worker, Social Call
(This one could go either way on designation).
Rode over to my original former place of work to collect my coffee order from Benton.  When my job went away, he just moved me to the "outside co-op member" list.  As I pulled up, friend Maria, former walking buddy AND former Portland to Coast Walking Relay team member, came by.  We did a fair amount of catching up; I hadn't seen her since just after Thanksgiving.  She had to then head off to yoga, but Benton came out with my coffee, and there was more catching up.

#6 Coffee pickup at Former Place of Employ

#7 New Seasons Grocery, Store
It was on the way, and we needed Irish cheese and whole wheat flour.  The Irish cheese was surprisingly had to find.

#7 grocery stop at New Seasons

#8 The Bank, Personal Business
The short contract I picked up last month paid me.  I deposited the check.  The road construction on the road which makes it EASY to get into the bank is still not complete.  They've even cut off access to the sidewalk, making getting into the bank coming from the west rather challenging.

#8 Bank run

#8 at the ATM

#9 Library, Returning books, Non Store Errand
(it isn't art and entertainment, because I wasn't taking any new books away)
The automated drive-up return window (reads the books RFID chip and checks it in automatically) works better from a bike than it does from a car.

#9 returning the library books

Total miles: 6.7

So I am all there on miles; now just have to run three more errands...

Errandonnee 2015 1, 2, and 3

Fitz wanted to pick up some burlap to put on our metal roof vents, so the birds would quit drilling on them.  It is annoyingly loud, and we have to go out and yell at them, or toss a pinecone up on the roof.  I am thinking a slingshot would be really good for this.  So, anyway, he called over to Longbottoms Coffee Roasters to see if they had any empty bags.  They said they did.  So Fitz suggested lunch.  And me, ever looking to work in an Errandonnee, said "I'll ride over; you can meet me there."  Well, he thought he'd ride too.

So off we went, pretending that we were commuting to work, except, being retired, we aren't anymore.  10.5 miles later, there we were.  We had fun chatting up other cyclists out on lunch rides or errands, or whatever, along the way.

Parked at Longbottoms

They've still got the NO CLEATS OR SHOES WITH CLEAT COVERS sign on the door, and many signs saying DON'T REARRANGE THE TABLES.  So I went in, carrying my shoes.  Lunch was ordered.  Fitz asked after the burlap bags, and someone went in the back to check.  Oops.  No bags.  Ah well, we did have lunch.

The remains of lunch

During lunch, I got an email saying my library book was waiting for me.  Oooh, another stop!

Learning: they have burlap bags but not today.  Also, it still isn't clear if they like cyclists.

Errandonnee 1 complete.  Social Call. 10.54 mi

I needed to stop at the bike shop for new cleats.  Fitz dithered, then thought he'd ride home by way of the bike shop with me.  We went back on NW Cornell, and headed down to SW Baseline/Jenkins by way of SW 158th, then headed south on Hocken to Millikan, then eastward to Bike Gallery.

I didn't recognize anyone in the shop, and I know most of the mechanics...  Bought my cleats and some tire levers, then went to find Fitz.  He was trying on helmets, because his was disintegrating.  Now, my non-rando helmet is 9 years old, and I know better, I truly do. Really.  There was a hi-viz green helmet with reflective bits on the shelf, and I tried it on.  Two new helmets later...

I wasn't planning on buying a new helmet

Asked about the store staff...  My favorite mechanics are still there, but everyone else has moved on.

Sweetpea lurking by the helmets

Learnings: favorite mechanics are still working there.  The cashier and I agreed that the metal core tire levers break at the wrong time.  They'll take your old helmet and dispose of it!

Errandonnee 2 complete. Bike Shop, 9.15mi

Remember that email from the library?  Fitz decided he'd go straight home; I detoured by the library.  I didn't have my card with me, but I did have the card number.  Parked the Sweetpea outside with my flimsy little touring lock and hoped for the best.  The racks are under camera surveillance.  Snagged the book, and waited in line to check out, which is what happens when one does not have one's card.  Ah, bike still there.

Waiting to check out at the library

Book on bike

Learnings: if you know your library card number, even if you don't have the card, it's good.

Errandonnee 3 complete.  Art & Entertainment, .81mi

And home, 2.16mi

Total miles for the day: 22.68

Errandonnee 12, Haircut

Look ma, much less hair!

Errandonnee 12, haircut, 5.6 miles

Rode over to see our haircut person (she's been cutting my hair for 35 years) on the Sweetpea, because I am trying to get the new saddle to like me, and wanted to check out another adjustment.  Mostly, I have been adjusting it, riding up and down the driveway in jeans, calling it good, and then going off and riding a 200k.  Four times.  It hasn't always been for the best.  So, in riding pants this time...

Yes.  So, Suyapa told me she wanted to try something NEW and was I up for it.  After detailed questioning, I agreed.  It would grow out in 5 or 6 weeks if I didn't like it.

Criteria:
wash, comb, and that's it.
symmetric (makes me crazy if it isn't)

She poured me a glass of wine and got started.  Then Fitz showed up (this was planned), and she poured HIM a glass of wine.  The pile of hair on the floor got bigger.  Just to mention, it wasn't really that long in the first place.  Now it is considerably less long.  That is ok for the warmer weather.  In the winter, my head gets cold.

Fitz got his haircut, we visited, she admired Sweetpea.

5.6 miles.  New haircut, which I think I like.

Errandonnee 10 and 11, Portland Timbers Game and Coffee (again)

The Portland Timbers soccer match was a midday one today.  Thought I'd ride over the hill, enjoy the game, and ride back, pausing at the Starbucks at the summit.

Stuffed my Timbers jersey, cap and scarf in a bag, pulled on somewhat warmer riding gear than I would normally wear, because I'd be standing for a couple of hours.  Sit?  What is this SIT during a Timbers match?

Errandonnee 10 and 11, sporting event (go Timbers!) and coffee 14.6 miles

Arrived at the stadium in time to hear the Timbers Army chanting and then the National Anthem.  As I was locking up the bike, a security guy came over, did I have a Season Pass or parking sticker?  Well, I did have a Season Pass, so was allowed to lock up in the secure parking (actually the only parking, because events overwhelm the standard street parking).

Errandonnee 10 and 11, sporting event (go Timbers!) and coffee. 14.6 mi

The game ended in a tie.  Well, better than not losing.

Chatting with a couple of the other cyclists after, it appears I got very lucky.  Season ticket holders can get a transit pass, a car parking pass, or a bike parking pass.  We have the transit pass. Oops.

So, now climbing back UP Park Ave (reallyreallyreallysteep), through Washington Park, up to Sylvan and the Sylvan Starbucks.  Brief relaxing pause for an Iced Caramel Coffee.

Errandonnee 10 and 11, sporting event (go Timbers!) and coffee 14.6 miles

All downhill to home from there.

14.6 miles.  All the miles, one more errand to go.

Errandonnee 9 Coffee before Dawn

Crista Permanista reviewed the updated Perm 1513 cue sheet, and found a couple omissions, plus a few places where RideWithGPS "helped" which I did not catch on my proofread.  I expect riders WOULD want to know to turn R to get on the Broadway Bridge.  Details.

Maria. Starbucks at dawn.  3 miles

As three riders were going out THIS MORNING, I updated the cue sheet and printed out three new copies somewhere around midnight, set my alarm and got a few hours of sleep.  Up at 6:30, down the hill to find them.  Didn't see any bikes at Jim and Patty's, but there were some customers at Starbucks.

Observation:  I think I finally have the headlight adjusted to my liking.  Observation by others: bright tail light!
(dark downhill, dawn uphill.  Luxos U headlight, Secula Plus seatstay mount tail light)

Bought myself a cup of coffee, and shared some route notes ("there is a mudslide just past the fish hatchery").

Underway, rode with them back to my house (on the route), and loaned out a reflective item to a rider who had forgotten theirs.  I'll get it back this evening when they finish.

3 miles.

Errandonnee 8, The Bank

Quick trip, because the mobile banking app is leading us all through the deposit process and then dying.  Repeatedly.

Bank. 3.25 miles

3.25 miles
Wild Card
It was past statutory sunset, so it might qualify as "dark".  Well, "dusk".  The lights were on, and I was one reflective ankle band short of being Randonneurs USA compliant.

Lighting - SonDelux generator hub, Luxos U headlight, Secula Plus wired taillight.  Bright little thing.
